Some Observations of Internet Stream Lifetimes
نویسنده
چکیده
We present measurements of stream lifetimes for Internet traffic on a backbone link in California and a university link in Auckland. We investigate the consequences of sampling techniques such as ignoring streams with six or fewer packets, since they usually account for less than 10% of the total bytes. We find that we often observe large bursts of small ‘attack’ streams, which will diminish the integrity of strategies that ‘focus on the elephants’. Our observations further demonstrate the danger of traffic engineering approaches based on incorrect assumptions about the nature of the traffic.

Density Estimators for Truncated Dependent Data
In some long term studies, a series of dependent and possibly truncated lifetime data may be observed. Suppose that the lifetimes have a common continuous distribution function F. A popular stochastic measure of the distance between the density function f of the lifetimes and its kernel estimate fn is the integrated square error (ISE). In this paper, we derive a central limit theorem for t...
متن کاملAttacks on Additive Encryption of Redundant Plaintext and Implications on Internet Security
We present and analyze attacks on additive stream ciphers that rely on linear equations that hold with non-trivial probability in plaintexts that are encrypted using distinct keys. These attacks extend Biham’s key collision attack and Hellman’s time memory tradeoff attack, and can be applied to any additive stream cipher. We define linear redundancy to characterize the vulnerability of a plaint...
متن کاملPacket-oriented Communication Using a Stream Protocol or Making TCP/IP on Berkeley UNIX a little more pleasant to use
The only DoD protocols supporting the Transport Layer in the OSI Model are UDP and TCP. UDP is packet-oriented while TCP is stream-oriented. It is often useful to mix characteristics of both. This paper describes a software package that simulates the useful properties of UDP while using TCP. Also included are some functions for easier establishment of connections than by using TCP/IP primitives...
متن کاملUnderstanding Internet Traffic Streams: Dragonflies and Tortoises
We present the concept of network traffic streams, and the ways they aggregate into flows through Internet links. We describe a method of measuring the size and lifetime of Internet streams, and use this method to characterise traffic distributions at two different sites. We find that although most streams (about 45% of them) are dragonflies, lasting less than 2 seconds, a significant number of...
متن کاملFull Stream Ahead
Data Stream Management I’ll begin by thanking Frank Olken and Le Gruenwald, as well as Oliver Spatscheck of IC’s editorial board, for their efforts in selecting the articles for this issue. I’ve read a draft of their introduction, which gives a clear and concise tutorial on what data stream management means and what issues surrounding it must be addressed. I recommend that readers unfamiliar wi...
